Came packaged wrapped up like a burrito in a roll with a canvas layer on the outside and a plastic layer on the inside.
It didn't take long to take its normal shape after I unpackaged it. After the first night, it was laid out flat and the warehouse odor had gone.
This is just your typical futon mattress like you could find anywhere for around $100. It is double sided which is nice because my last one had one padded side and one flat side so that I couldn't flip it over to keep its shape maintained.
The cover is a very thin, canvas material. It is very firm with not much padding.
I actually sleep daily on my futon because I move a lot and need light furniture. I wouldn't recommend this if you are sleeping on it on a regular basis like I am. It's just not thick and padded enough. Also, it is closer to five inches thick than 6 inches thick.
