I can't feel the futon slats through the mattress, it is a soft yet firm mattress, and I would recommend it.
I didn't need to add anything on top of it to make it perfect.

Not thick enough for a platform bed, September 25, 2010 By Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: Day Dreamer Luxe 6000 - Full, Navy (Kitchen) This is an all-foam futon. It would probably be fine on a futon sofa-bed or for a guest room bed that is seldom used. For every day use it is not adequate. When it first arrived, it felt fine. After a month, I could feel the center brace in my full size platform bed. It wasn't much longer before I could feel the slats. I sleep on my side and that center beam digs into my hip. The foam has simply compressed too much and does not bounce back quickly.
I have started flipping the mattress every time I change the sheets. If that works I will update. I am expecting that I will have to buy a memory foam mattress topper, which will eat up the cost saving over a thicker futon mattress. For full time use on a platform bed you will need a better mattress.

It's more like 4 1/2 to 5 inches thick even after giving it a month to expand. It's fine as a firm futon. I haven't used it as a bed. I was trying to purchase an economical futon mattress so maybe it's ok for the price point.
